Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)

is a graceful Florida native tree prized for its fragrant white flowers, silvery leaf undersides, and natural affinity for moist landscapes. Smaller and more open in character than Southern Magnolia, it brings a lighter texture to pond edges, rain gardens, low-lying planting areas, and residential landscapes where a large evergreen canopy would be too imposing.

Its creamy-white, lemon-scented blooms appear from spring into summer, followed by cone-like fruit that reveals bright red seeds. Sweetbay Magnolia performs best in full sun to partial shade with moist, acidic soil, making it an excellent native choice for sites that retain moisture without remaining deeply flooded for extended periods.
