USDA Growing Zones
Zone 5–9
Sun Requirements
Grows best in full sun to partial shade. At least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day encourages better flowering and form.
Planting Instructions
-
Choose a well-drained location with some protection from intense afternoon sun, especially in southern Florida.
-
Space at least 10–15 feet from buildings or other trees.
-
Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
-
Backfill with native soil and water thoroughly after planting.
-
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Soil Requirements
Prefers moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It tolerates loamy, sandy, or clay soils, but poor drainage should be avoided.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) in early spring during the first couple of years. Avoid over-fertilization, which can reduce flowering.
Watering
-
Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first 6–8 weeks after planting.
-
After establishment, water during dry spells to maintain health and flowering potential.
-
Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate root temperature.
Pruning
-
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
-
Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
-
Minimal pruning is required; maintain its natural shape for best results.
What Makes It Thrive
-
Full sun to partial shade with good airflow
-
Moist, well-drained soils
-
Consistent watering during establishment
-
Minimal pruning and low soil fertility
