Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)
is one of Florida’s most distinctive and adaptable native canopy trees, valued for its stately form, exceptional tolerance of wet soils, and remarkable seasonal presence. Naturally associated with floodplains, river margins, and cypress swamps, it performs beautifully in designed landscapes ranging from stormwater edges and retention areas to lawns and large civic spaces with average, well-drained soils. Unlike most conifers, Bald Cypress is deciduous: its soft, feathery foliage emerges fresh green in spring, creates a refined summer canopy, and turns warm russet-orange before dropping in fall. Long-lived, resilient, and visually memorable, it is an excellent choice where designers need a large native tree that brings both ecological function and year-round character to the landscape.
