Florida Gold Plum (Prunus umbellata)

Locally Grafted at Flowing Well Tree Farm

Florida Gold Plum is a beautiful native fruiting tree prized for its early spring blooms, edible golden plums, and outstanding wildlife value. Fragrant white flowers attract pollinators in early spring, followed by small golden-yellow fruits enjoyed by birds and other wildlife. Its graceful form and manageable size make it an excellent choice for home landscapes, food forests, and restoration plantings.

Mature Size

Typically reaches 15–25 feet tall with a similar spread at maturity.

USDA Growing Zones

Thrives in USDA Zones 7–10, making it well suited for Florida and much of the Southeast.

Placement & Sun Exposure

Plant in full sun for best flowering and fruit production. Florida Gold Plum performs best in open areas with good air circulation and enough space to reach its natural form.

Planting Instructions

Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the tree at the same soil level as it was grown in the container. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply a light layer of mulch, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

Soil Requirements

Prefers well-drained soil and adapts well to sandy or loamy conditions. Once established, it tolerates a range of soil types but does not perform well in consistently wet or waterlogged areas.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After establishment, Florida Gold Plum is moderately drought tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Fertilizer

Requires minimal fertilization. If needed, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce flowering and fruiting.

Pruning

Prune lightly in late winter or after fruiting to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Minimal pruning is needed to maintain a healthy, natural shape.

🌱 Plants provided by Flowing Well Tree Farm are locally grown and selected for long-term success in Florida landscapes.

Perfect for native gardens, wildlife habitats, and edible landscapes, Florida Gold Plum brings beauty, resilience, and seasonal harvests to your outdoor space.

    • First time customer due to the CFL frost but I’m ecstatic that I found Andrew and his farm. I’ve been to many farms and the nothing compares the personal touch he provides. If you are looking for a plant / tree that he has I’m telling you look no further. I drove an hour and fifteen minutes with a toddler to check him out (to put that in relation) and I would happily do it again for any of my landscaping needs!5/5 Ryan
    • We found Flowing Well Tree Farm on social media, and it was a delightful surprise to enter their farm and be surrounded with so many beautiful trees and plants. Their staff was everywhere, taking care of each plant on the huge property. We were greeted by Andrew, who took time to drive my grandson and me all around the farm, to help us choose one little tree for our yard. Nevertheless, he treated us as VIPs, and we learned quite a lot about the plants along the way. We were so impressed with how many rare Florida native plants they are propagating and caring for. Madison is a treasure. She showed us their astounding website full of information and easy ordering, and connected with us in such a friendly way. Their prices are very reasonable, and we are planning to go back often whenever we want more plants!5/5 Friends Deleon
    • As a lifelong Floridian, native gardening is very important to me. When my regular native nursery did not have the Flatwoods Plum tree I was looking for, I came across Flowing Well. I drove over an hour from Lake County, and it was definitely worth the trip! Madison was very helpful and even introduced me to another native tree, the Pawpaw, and I bought 2! I will definitely be back when I'm ready for some more trees. Their prices are great too! Please consider native plants when you start your Florida garden/food forest, they're so much more beneficial for the pollinators, you and your Florida landscape. Thanks Madison!! And Andrew too!5/5 SP
