Thornless | Early Fruiting | Self-Pollinating

Prime-Ark® Freedom is a breakthrough thornless blackberry variety known for its large, sweet berries and early fruiting season. It produces two harvests a year—first on new canes (primocanes) and again on second-year canes (floricanes). With upright growth and no thorns, this variety is easy to manage and ideal for home gardens or edible landscapes.

USDA Growing Zones

Zone 6–9

Sun Requirements

Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) for vigorous growth and maximum fruit production.

Planting Instructions

Space plants 3–4 feet apart in rows spaced 6–8 feet apart.

Plant at the same depth as the nursery container.

Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Soil Requirements

Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Amend with compost if soil is heavy or nutrient-poor.

Fertilizer

Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) in early spring and again after the first harvest. Avoid over-fertilizing, which may lead to excess foliage and reduced fruiting.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist during the first year. Mature plants require 1–2 inches of water per week, especially during fruit development.

Pruning

In late winter, remove dead or weak canes.

After fruiting, cut back spent floricanes to the ground.

Tip primocanes in midsummer to encourage branching and increase next season’s yield.

What Makes It Thrive

Full sun exposure

Consistent moisture and mulch

Pruning to manage cane production

Well-drained, fertile soil

Prime-Ark® Freedom is the first thornless primocane-fruiting blackberry, offering flavorful berries, ease of harvest, and low maintenance. A great choice for backyard growers looking for reliable, high-yielding fruit with two harvests a year.
