Camellia Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis) – 3 Gallon
Evergreen Shrub | Harvest Your Own Tea | Shade-Tolerant and Hardy
The Camellia Tea Plant is the source of all true teas—green, black, white, and oolong. This attractive evergreen shrub features glossy green leaves and delicate white blooms and thrives in warm, humid environments. Ideal for edible landscapes, tea gardens, or ornamental plantings, it adds both beauty and utility to the garden.
Planting Zone:
USDA Zones 7–9. Cold-hardy with protection; prefers mild winters and humid summers. Can be grown in containers in colder regions and overwintered indoors.
Watering Needs:
Requires consistent moisture. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering. Soil should stay evenly moist—not soggy.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Ideal pH is between 5.5 and 6.5. Avoid alkaline or heavy clay soils unless amended properly.
Light Requirements:
Performs best in partial shade to dappled sunlight. Can tolerate full sun in cooler areas if watered adequately, but benefits from protection from harsh afternoon sun in hotter climates.
Fertilizer:
Feed with an acid-loving plant fertilizer (like azalea or camellia formulas) in early spring and again in midsummer. Avoid over-fertilization, which can burn roots.
Pruning & Care:
Prune after flowering to shape and encourage bushiness. Light, regular pruning improves leaf production, which is ideal for tea harvesting. Remove any dead or crossed branches.
Planting Instructions:
-
Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
-
Mix in organic compost to improve drainage and acidity.
-
Place the plant at the same depth it was in the pot.
-
Backfill with native soil and water deeply.
-
Mulch with pine bark or pine needles to maintain acidity and moisture.
-
Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment period.
The Camellia sinensis is a versatile, ornamental, and functional plant that allows you to grow and harvest your own tea at home. Whether in the ground or in containers, it adds elegance and value to any garden.
