Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum)

1ft Tall

Growing Zone: 5–9

The Goji Berry, also known as Lycium barbarum, is a hardy, deciduous shrub renowned for its vibrant red berries, packed with antioxidants and nutrients. Perfect for home gardens, edible landscapes, or containers, this plant produces clusters of small, sweet-tart berries from summer through early fall. Goji berries are celebrated for their health benefits and make excellent additions to smoothies, teas, or snacks.

Planting Instructions:

Choose a location with well-draining soil.

Space multiple plants 3–5 feet apart to allow proper growth.

Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and plant at the same depth as the nursery container.

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Sun & Shade Placement:

Full sun is ideal for maximum fruit production.

Can tolerate partial shade, but fruiting may be reduced.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers sandy to loamy soil with good drainage.

Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.1–7.5) is optimal.

Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas to prevent root rot.

Watering:

Keep soil consistently moist during the first growing season.

Once established, the plant is moderately drought-tolerant.

Fertilizer:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer to encourage growth and fruiting.

Compost or well-rotted manure can also improve soil fertility naturally.

Pruning:

Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or weak branches.

Shape the plant to maintain airflow and encourage new growth.

Can be pruned lightly after fruiting to maintain size and productivity.

Additional Notes:

Goji berries are self-pollinating, but planting more than one can increase yield.

Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
