Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) – Florida Native – 3 & 30 Gallon
Long-Lived Shade Tree | Wetland Champion | Adaptable and Majestic
Bald Cypress is a stately, deciduous conifer native to Florida’s swamps, riverbanks, and floodplains. Known for its soft, feathery foliage and distinctive flared trunk base, this tree thrives in wet conditions but is surprisingly adaptable to drier sites once established. It’s ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, and large-scale restoration or landscape projects where durability and beauty are equally important.
Available in both 3 and 30 Gallon sizes.
USDA Growing Zones
Zone 5–10
Sun Requirements
Performs best in full sun, which supports strong trunk development and vibrant foliage growth.
Planting Instructions
-
Select a spot with plenty of space for vertical growth and root spread.
-
Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball.
-
Place the tree at the same depth as it was in the container, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly.
-
Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Soil Requirements
Grows well in moist, wet, or even standing water, but also tolerates drier soils once mature. Prefers acidic to neutral soil, including sand, clay, or loam.
Fertilizer
Typically does not require fertilization in native or wetland soils. In poor soils, a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring can support early growth.
Watering
-
Requires frequent watering during establishment, especially in drier conditions.
-
Once established, Bald Cypress is extremely tolerant of wet conditions and also handles temporary drought.
-
Ideal for planting in or near ponds, ditches, retention areas, or flood-prone landscapes.
Pruning
-
Minimal pruning needed.
-
Prune in late winter to remove any broken, crossing, or weak branches.
-
Allow natural, upright form to develop undisturbed for best shape and strength.
What Makes It Thrive
-
Planted in full sun with access to moisture
-
Consistent watering during the first year
-
Moist or wet soils with low competition
-
