Florida Native | Fast-Growing | Fragrant Evergreen
Wax Myrtle is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed evergreen shrub or small tree native to Florida and the southeastern U.S. It features aromatic foliage, small waxy berries that attract birds, and a naturally dense growth habit that makes it perfect for privacy screens, windbreaks, and habitat restoration. Versatile and low-maintenance, it adapts well to a variety of landscape conditions.
USDA Growing Zones 7–10
Sun Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes denser foliage and faster growth.
Planting Instructions
Space plants 4–8 feet apart for hedges or screens.
Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball.
Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base (keeping mulch away from the trunk).
Soil Requirements: Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and slightly acidic soils. Thrives in both moist and dry sites. Salt-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal landscapes.
Fertilizer: Generally does not require fertilizer in most soils. If needed, apply a light dose of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage growth.
Watering: Water deeply 1–2 times per week during the first 6–8 weeks. Once established, Wax Myrtle is highly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during long dry spells.
Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or size.
Can be limbed up to form a small tree or cut back for rejuvenation.
Tolerant of shearing for formal hedging.
What Makes It Thrive:
Full sun and good drainage
Low-maintenance soil conditions
Seasonal pruning to manage shape
Planted in naturalistic or wildlife-supporting areas
Wax Myrtle is a dependable, fast-growing native that offers privacy, wind resistance, and ecological value. It’s a top choice for homeowners, landscapers, and restoration projects throughout Florida and the southeastern U.S.
