Pollinator Magnet | Wetland Friendly | Fast Growing

Buttonbush is a fast-growing native shrub ideal for wetland areas, pond edges, and rain gardens. Its round, creamy-white flower clusters bloom from spring through summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The plant is an excellent choice for erosion control in moist soils and a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly landscapes.

USDA Growing Zones: Zone 5–10

Sun Requirements

Thrives in full sun to part shade, with best flowering and growth in full sun.

Planting Instructions

Space plants 4–6 feet apart in wet areas or as a loose hedge.

Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly shallower than the root ball.

Backfill with native soil, press firmly, and water thoroughly after planting.

Soil Requirements

Prefers moist to wet soils, including muck, clay, and sandy loam. Tolerates occasional standing water and is perfect for low spots, pond edges, or rain gardens.

Fertilizer

Generally does not require fertilizer in native or healthy garden soils. If desired, apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer in early spring during the first year.

Watering

Requires regular watering during establishment (first 6–8 weeks). Afterward, it thrives in wet conditions but can tolerate short dry spells once mature.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or rejuvenate older plants.

Can be cut back hard to encourage bushier growth.

Remove dead wood or weak stems as needed.

What Makes It Thrive

Planted in or near moist soil or areas that flood periodically

Full sun for maximum flowering

Minimal disturbance once established

Regular water access or consistent moisture

Buttonbush is a staple for Florida native and wetland plantings, providing structure, pollinator support, and natural beauty. Its adaptability to wet sites and wildlife value make it a favorite for naturalized and conservation landscapes.
