Sweet Bay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) – 3 Gallon

Sweet Bay Magnolia is a graceful, semi-evergreen native tree known for its fragrant, creamy white flowers and silvery leaf undersides that add movement and texture to the landscape. It thrives in moist soils and is ideal for naturalized plantings, rain gardens, or as a specimen tree.

Planting Instructions

Timing: Plant in early spring or fall to give roots time to establish.

Location: Select a site with good drainage in full sun to partial shade.

Spacing: Plant at least 8 to 12 feet apart when using in groups.

Depth: Set the tree so the root flare is slightly above ground level. Do not plant too deep.

Soil Requirements

Prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soils

Adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soil types

Excellent choice for areas with seasonal wetness or near water features

Mulch to conserve moisture and regulate root temperature

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first year after planting

Established trees tolerate short dry periods but grow best with steady moisture

Avoid letting the soil fully dry out

Pruning

Prune sparingly, primarily to shape or remove crossing/damaged branches

Best time to prune is after flowering

Do not prune heavily in winter as this can reduce blooming

Sun Placement

Performs well in full sun, which promotes dense foliage and more flowers

Tolerates partial shade, particularly in hotter climates

Too much shade may reduce flowering and slow growth

Fertilizer

Use a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring

Supplement with organic compost if desired

Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers

Growth Habit

Upright, multi-stemmed or single-trunked small tree

Grows 15 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide

Moderate growth rate

Semi-evergreen in southern climates, deciduous in northern zones

Provides seasonal interest and supports pollinators and native wildlife
