American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)

 is one of Florida’s boldest native shade trees, valued for its massive canopy, striking mottled bark, and rapid growth on spacious sites. Its broad, maple-like leaves provide dense summer shade, while the bark sheds in patches of cream, white, gray, and olive-brown to create exceptional winter interest.

Naturally associated with streambanks, floodplains, and rich bottomlands, Sycamore performs best in full sun and soils with reliable moisture. Reserve it for parks, campuses, large properties, and naturalized settings where its substantial mature size—often 70 feet or more—can be fully appreciated; avoid tight spaces, overhead utilities, and high-traffic areas affected by its seasonal leaf and seed-ball drop.
