Winged Elm (Ulmus alata)

is a tough, adaptable Florida native shade tree valued for its compact form, fine-textured canopy, and unusual corky “wings” along its young branches. It develops into a medium-sized deciduous tree with a rounded to broadly vase-shaped crown, making it well suited to residential landscapes, naturalized plantings, parks, and other sites where a full-size oak or pine would be too large.
Adaptable to full sun or partial shade, Winged Elm performs best in reasonably well-drained soils and brings reliable shade, seasonal yellow fall color, and a more informal native character to the landscape.
