Standard Japanese Blueberry (Elaeocarpus decipiens)
USDA Zones: 8–11
Overview:
The Standard Japanese Blueberry is an elegant evergreen tree known for its rich green foliage, coppery-bronze new growth, and striking upright form. Mature trees can reach 30–40 feet tall and 20–30 feet wide, making them ideal for privacy screens, formal accents, or street trees. While not grown for edible fruit, it does produce small blue-black berries and fragrant white flowers that add ornamental value.
Soil Requirements:
This tree prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–6.5) but can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. Avoid planting in heavy clay or poorly draining areas, as it can be sensitive to root rot.
Watering Needs:
Water deeply and regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Once established, the Japanese Blueberry is moderately drought-tolerant, but performs best with consistent moisture, especially in hot climates. Avoid letting the soil stay overly wet.
Fertilizer:
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or a fertilizer for acid-loving plants). A second light feeding in midsummer can promote healthy growth and maintain leaf color. Avoid over-fertilizing, which may cause root stress or leaf burn.
