Standard Eagleston Holly (Ilex x attenuata 'Eagleston')
USDA Zones: 6–10
Overview:
The Eagleston Holly is a beautiful evergreen tree known for its dense, pyramidal form and year-round appeal. Growing up to 20–30 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, it features glossy green leaves and bright red berries in fall and winter, making it a favorite for both ornamental use and wildlife attraction. The standard form is often pruned into a single-trunk tree, perfect as a privacy screen, accent tree, or formal landscape element.
Soil Requirements:
Eagleston Holly thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils (pH 5.5–6.5) but is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy or loamy soils. Avoid heavy clay or areas with poor drainage to prevent root rot.
Watering Needs:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) for the first 6–12 months to help roots establish. Once established, Eagleston Holly is moderately drought-tolerant, but occasional deep watering during dry spells will keep it looking its best.
Fertilizer:
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees or acid-loving plants. Avoid over-fertilizing—too much nitrogen can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of berries. A second light application in mid-summer is optional but helpful for maintaining vigor.
