Standard Natchez & Muskogee Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei hybrids)
USDA Zones: 7–10
Overview:
Both Natchez and Muskogee are standout crape myrtle varieties known for their large size, stunning flowers, and attractive bark.
Natchez features pure white blooms and grows up to 25–30 feet tall, with beautiful cinnamon-colored exfoliating bark.
Muskogee produces lavender-purple blooms and grows to about 20–25 feet tall, with a similar upright canopy and smooth, mottled bark.
Both are excellent choices for street trees, shade trees, or focal points in the landscape, offering long bloom periods from summer into fall.
Soil Requirements:
These crape myrtles thrive in well-drained soil and tolerate a variety of soil types including sandy, loamy, and clay, as long as there’s good drainage. They prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0).
Watering Needs:
Water regularly after planting to establish roots. Once established, both varieties are highly drought-tolerant. Deep watering every couple of weeks during dry spells helps promote better blooming and overall health.
Fertilizer:
Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which may promote foliage over flowers. A second light feeding in mid-summer can help extend the blooming period.
