Coontie – 3 Gallon (Zamia integrifolia)
USDA Zones: 8–11
Overview:
The Coontie is a low-growing, Florida-native cycad with soft, feather-like foliage that gives it a palm-like appearance. This hardy, evergreen plant is perfect for foundation plantings, borders, native gardens, or shady landscapes. Slow-growing and compact, the 3-gallon size is ideal for establishing in small spaces or mass plantings. Mature height typically ranges from 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.
Soil Requirements:
Coontie thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils and is very tolerant of poor, dry soils once established. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) and does not do well in wet or poorly draining conditions.
Watering Needs:
Water regularly after planting to help establish roots. Once established, Coontie is very drought-tolerant and only needs occasional watering. Be careful not to overwater—good drainage is key.
Fertilizer:
Feed in spring and summer with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for palms or cycads. Avoid over-fertilizing, as Coontie is naturally low-maintenance and sensitive to salt buildup in the soil.
This tough little native is also a host plant for the Atala butterfly, making it a great pick for pollinator and wildlife gardens!
