Standard & Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon spp.)

USDA Zones: 8–11

Overview:
Bottlebrush plants are known for their vibrant red, brush-like blooms that attract hummingbirds and pollinators. The Standard Bottlebrush grows upright as a large shrub or small tree, typically reaching 10–15 feet tall. The Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis) features graceful, arching branches that give it a cascading appearance, often growing 15–20 feet tall and wide when mature.

Both varieties are evergreen, heat-tolerant, and thrive in warm climates, making them excellent choices for specimen plantings, hedges, or pollinator gardens.

Soil Requirements:

Bottlebrush plants prefer well-drained soil and do best in sandy or loamy textures. They can tolerate slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.0–7.5) and are relatively adaptable to poor soils as long as drainage is good. Avoid heavy clay or consistently soggy spots.

Watering Needs:

Water regularly after planting to help establish roots—typically for the first few months. Once established, Bottlebrush is moderately drought-tolerant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Be cautious not to overwater, especially in poorly draining soils.

Fertilizer:

Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) to support healthy growth and blooming. A light feeding again in midsummer can encourage a second flush of flowers. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilizers, especially if your soil already contains adequate nutrients.
