St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park Plant Give-Away Instructions 2025
Thank you for adopting one of our beautiful native plants! By planting these species in your yard, you are supporting local wildlife, pollinators, and a healthier Florida ecosystem. Below are planting and care instructions for each plant to help you get started.
🔥 Firebush (Hamelia patens)
Planting: Choose a sunny or lightly shaded location. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the container. Place the plant level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and water thoroughly.
Watering: Water regularly until established, then only during extended dry periods. Firebush is drought-tolerant once mature.
Soil: Prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil but adapts to most conditions.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring for best growth.
Placement: Full sun to partial shade; more sun encourages heavier flowering.
Pruning: Lightly prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage new growth.
Peak Season: Blooms nearly year-round in Florida, providing nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds.
🍁 Florida Flame Maple (Acer rubrum var. drummondii)
Planting: Plant in a sunny or partly shaded location with room for a tall canopy. Dig a wide planting hole, set the tree at the same depth it grew in the pot, backfill, and water thoroughly.
Watering: Water deeply 2–3 times per week until established (first 6–12 months). Once mature, water during prolonged droughts.
Soil: Prefers moist, slightly acidic soil but adapts to most well-drained soils.
Fertilizer: Feed with a slow-release tree fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth.
Placement: Ideal as a shade or specimen tree.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove crossing or damaged branches and to shape canopy.
Peak Season: Known for its brilliant red foliage in late fall and early winter, adding seasonal color.
🌿 Simpson Stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans)
Planting: Select a sunny to partially shaded location. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container, backfill, and water well.
Watering: Water consistently until established. Drought-tolerant once mature but benefits from supplemental watering during dry spells.
Soil: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer once in spring and again in late summer.
Placement: Works well as a hedge, privacy screen, or specimen shrub.
Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain size and shape, or let grow naturally for a more informal look.
Peak Season: Blooms in late spring with fragrant white flowers, followed by bright orange-red berries that attract birds.
