- Choose the Right Location
Light:
- Full Sun: 6+ hours of direct sunlight
- Partial Shade: 3–6 hours of light or filtered sun
- Shade: Less than 3 hours of direct sun
Space:
- For large shrubs, minimum 6’ and for trees minimum 10’ of spacing between each other and any structures
- Make sure to not plant under power lines, trees will eventually grow tall! - imagine the tree when it’s fully grown
- Mind any pipes underground
Soil:
- Depending on the type of plant, choose the right soil type. The majority of plants need well-drained soil.
2. How to Plant
- Dig the Hole – as wide as the root ball and deep enough for the root ball to stick out about one inch.
- Set the Plant – Place so the top of the root ball is ONE inch above the soil level.
- Prune the root - Gently cut or loosen the rootball so that the roots are directed to grow outwards.
- Backfill – Fill in with native soil, gently firming to remove air pockets.
- Water Thoroughly – Water immediately after planting to settle the soil.
3. Watering (Most Important)
- Keep soil moist, not soggy during establishment.
- First 8 weeks: Deep watering 1 time per day (more in hot or windy weather).
- Soil Matters:
- Sandy soil → water more often
- Clay soil → water less often
- Best time to water: Early morning
Tip: Check soil 2–3 inches below the surface — if dry, it’s time to water.
4. Mulching
- Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch (pine bark, wood chips, compost).
- Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from the trunk or stem.
Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
5. Fertilizing
- Newly planted trees and shrubs do not need fertilizer right away.
- Once established, use a balanced fertilizer appropriate for the plant type. Use slow-release fertilizer preferably every 6 months.
- Avoid over-fertilizing — it can stress roots and cause burns.
6. Ongoing Care
- Check plants weekly for moisture, pests, or stress.
- Water deeply rather than frequently.
- Adjust care with the seasons — more water in heat, less in cool or rainy periods.
Common Signs to Watch For
- Underwatered: Wilting, dry or crispy leaves
- Overwatered: Yellowing leaves, soggy soil
- Sun stress: Scorched or pale leaves
If unsure, check the soil and roots before making changes.
Helpful Reminders
- Soil moisture matters more than the calendar — You can plant a tree whenever you want!
- Plants take time to establish — patience pays off.
