Native • Wildlife-Friendly • Shade-Loving
Wild Coffee is a lush, tropical-looking native shrub that thrives in Florida landscapes. With its glossy dark green leaves and red berry clusters, this plant adds beauty and ecological value to any garden. Despite the name, its berries are not for brewing—but they are a favorite of birds and pollinators!
USDA Zones:
Zones 9B–11 — Best suited for South and Central Florida. Protect from frost in cooler regions.
Soil Requirements:
- Prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
- Tolerates sandy and loamy soils.
- Performs best with a layer of mulch to retain moisture.
Planting Instructions:
- Choose a spot in partial to full shade.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and about the same depth.
- Remove the plant from the pot and gently loosen the root ball.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the ground.
- Backfill with soil and press down gently.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Watering:
- Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy for the first few months.
- Once established, Wild Coffee is drought-tolerant, but benefits from weekly watering during dry spells.
- Avoid overwatering—roots prefer oxygen-rich soil.
Fertilizer:
- Fertilize in spring and late summer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10).
- For a natural option, use compost or organic mulch to enrich the soil and suppress weeds.
