USDA Growing Zones
Best suited for Zones 9–11. In cooler climates, Passion Fruit can be grown in containers and protected during frost.

About the Plant
Possum Purple is a fast-growing tropical vine known for its striking purple-and-white flowers and vigorous climbing habit. This evergreen to semi-evergreen vine grows quickly and provides lush coverage while producing delicious edible fruit. The showy blooms also attract butterflies, bees, and pollinators, adding beauty and ecological value to your garden.

About the Fruit
Possum Purple produces medium to large purple passion fruit with aromatic pulp and a sweet-tangy tropical flavor. Fruit can be eaten fresh or used in juices, jams, desserts, cocktails, sauces, and smoothies. When ripe, fruit naturally drops from the vine and develops peak sweetness.

Mature Height & Growth
Fast-growing vine reaching 15–20 feet or more with support. Ideal for trellises, fences, arbors, pergolas, and privacy screening.

Sun Requirements
Performs best in full sun (6–8+ hours daily) for maximum flowering and fruit production. Partial shade is tolerated but may reduce yields.

Planting Instructions
Choose a sunny location with sturdy support.

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth.
  • Plant at the same depth as the nursery container.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Add mulch around the base to retain moisture, keeping mulch away from the stem.
  • Install a trellis, arbor, fence, or pergola for climbing support.

Soil Requirements
Thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soil rich in organic matter. Prefers slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Avoid soggy or poorly drained areas to prevent root problems.

Watering Needs
Water regularly during establishment to keep soil evenly moist. Once established, Passion Fruit is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with deep watering during dry periods and fruit production.

Fertilizer
Feed in early spring and midsummer using a balanced fruit-tree or flowering fertilizer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may produce excessive vine growth with fewer flowers and fruit.

Pruning & Care
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape the vine and encourage airflow. Remove dead, weak, or tangled growth as needed. Regular pruning helps improve fruit production and keeps vines manageable.

What Makes It Thrive
✔ Full sun and warm temperatures
✔ Strong trellis or climbing support
✔ Consistent watering during flowering and fruiting
✔ Well-drained, nutrient-rich soil
✔ Light seasonal pruning for airflow and productivity
