Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) – Liner

USDA Zones: 4–9

Overview:
The Red Mulberry is a fast-growing, native fruit tree prized for its sweet, juicy berries and adaptability to a wide range of landscapes. Starting from a liner, this tree can quickly mature into a medium to large tree, reaching 30–50 feet tall with a wide-spreading canopy. Its berries are loved by both people and wildlife, making it a wonderful choice for food forests, wildlife gardens, and homesteads.

Soil Requirements:

Red Mulberry prefers moist, well-drained soils, but it’s highly adaptable and can tolerate sandy, loamy, or clay soils once established. The ideal pH range is between 5.5 and 7.5. It grows best in fertile soils rich in organic matter, but it is tough enough to survive in poorer conditions.

Watering Needs:

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, Red Mulberry is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering, especially during dry periods or fruit production.

Growth & Care:

Mulberries grow quickly, especially when planted in full sun. For best fruit production, choose a sunny spot with good air circulation. Minimal pruning is needed, mainly to shape the tree or remove any dead or crossing branches. The Red Mulberry is self-fertile, so you only need one tree for fruit, though multiple trees can increase yield.
