Dwarf Mulberry (Morus sp.)
1-2 Feet in Height
Dwarf Mulberry is a compact, fast-growing fruit tree valued for its sweet, edible berries and exceptional wildlife appeal. This smaller-stature mulberry produces abundant fruit loved by birds and people alike, while its dense foliage provides shade and habitat. Its manageable size makes it ideal for home gardens, edible landscapes, and small spaces.
Mature Size
Typically reaches 10β15 feet tall with a similar spread, making it well suited for smaller yards and food forests.
USDA Growing Zones
Thrives in USDA Zones 6β10, performing well across much of the Southeast and beyond.
Placement & Sun Exposure
Plant in full sun for best fruit production, though it will tolerate partial sun. Choose a location with adequate space for canopy spread and good air circulation.
Planting Instructions
Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Set the plant at the same soil level as the container. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and mulch lightly, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
Soil Requirements
Adaptable to a wide range of soils, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as drainage is adequate. Dwarf Mulberry is tolerant of less-than-ideal soils once established.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, it is drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods or fruiting.
Fertilizer
Minimal fertilization is needed. If growth appears slow, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
Pruning
Prune in late winter while dormant to shape the plant and remove dead or crossing branches. Regular light pruning helps maintain compact size and encourages healthy fruiting.
