Southern Magnolia – From Seed (Magnolia grandiflora) 1-3Ft Tall
Southern Magnolia is a timeless Southern evergreen known for its glossy green leaves, rust-colored undersides, and large, fragrant white blooms. Grown from seed, each tree develops its own unique form while retaining the classic beauty and resilience of this iconic native species. It makes a stunning specimen tree for landscapes, estates, and naturalized plantings.
Mature Size
Typically reaches 60–80 feet tall with a spread of 30–40 feet at maturity.
USDA Growing Zones
Thrives in USDA Zones 7–10, performing well throughout the Southeast.
Placement & Sun Exposure
Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages denser growth and more consistent flowering, while partial shade is tolerated, especially in hotter regions.
Planting Instructions
Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Set the tree at the same soil level as it was grown in the container. Backfill with native soil, water deeply, and apply mulch while keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Soil Requirements
Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Adapts to sandy or loamy soils but should not be planted in areas with poor drainage.
Watering
Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, Southern Magnolia is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Fertilizer
Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring if needed. Mature trees typically require little supplemental feeding.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain structure.
