Yellow Jamaican Cherry (Muntingia calabura) – Locally Grown in Pierson, Florida

Our Yellow Jamaican Cherry trees are locally grown at Flowing Well Tree Farm in Pierson, Florida, thriving in the area’s warm climate and sandy, well-drained soils. This fast-growing tropical fruit tree produces sweet, yellow cherry-like fruit and is an excellent choice for edible landscapes, food forests, and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Planting Zone:
Yellow Jamaican Cherry grows best in USDA Zones 9–11 and is sensitive to cold. Protect young plants from frost in cooler areas.

Planting Instructions:
Plant in spring or early summer once temperatures remain warm. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Backfill with native soil amended with compost, water thoroughly, and apply a light mulch to retain moisture.

Placement & Sun Exposure:
This tree performs best in full sun for vigorous growth and heavy fruit production. While it tolerates partial shade, full sun encourages the sweetest fruit and strongest structure. Choose an open, warm site with good airflow.

Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil with moderate fertility. Jamaican Cherry adapts to a range of soil types but does not tolerate poorly drained or waterlogged conditions. Adding organic matter improves early establishment.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, the tree is drought tolerant, though occasional deep watering supports consistent fruiting.

Fertilizer:
Feed with a balanced fertilizer or organic compost in early spring and again in mid-summer. Avoid over-fertilizing with high nitrogen, which can reduce fruit production.

Why It’s a Great Plant:
Yellow Jamaican Cherry is fast growing, easy to maintain, and highly productive. Its sweet yellow fruit is enjoyed fresh and is a favorite of birds and pollinators, making it a beautiful and functional addition to Florida landscapes and edible gardens.
