Red Jamaican Cherry (Muntingia calabura) – Locally Grown in Pierson, Florida
Our Red Jamaican Cherry trees are locally grown at Flowing Well Tree Farm in Pierson, Florida, where they thrive in the warm climate and well-drained sandy soils. Known for their fast growth, sweet red fruit, and wildlife value, Jamaican Cherry trees are an excellent choice for edible landscapes, food forests, and Florida-friendly yards.
Planting Zone:
Red Jamaican Cherry grows best in USDA Zones 9–11. It is cold sensitive and should be protected from frost in cooler areas.
Planting Instructions:
Plant in spring or early summer once temperatures are consistently warm. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Backfill with native soil amended with compost, water deeply after planting, and apply a light mulch to help retain moisture.
Placement & Sun Exposure:
This tree performs best in full sun, which encourages strong growth and heavy fruiting. It can tolerate partial shade but fruits most abundantly with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight. Choose a warm, open location with good air circulation.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil with moderate fertility. Jamaican Cherry tolerates a range of soil types but does not perform well in poorly drained or waterlogged areas. Adding organic matter at planting improves establishment.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Jamaican Cherry is drought tolerant, though regular watering will support faster growth and better fruit production.
Fertilizer:
Apply a balanced fertilizer or organic compost in early spring and again in mid-summer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of fruiting.
Why It’s a Great Plant:
Red Jamaican Cherry is fast growing, low maintenance, and highly productive. The sweet, cherry-like fruit is enjoyed fresh by people and wildlife alike, making it a favorite for birds and pollinators. Its adaptability and reliable fruiting make it an excellent addition to Florida landscapes and edible gardens.
