Sunmist Nectarine (Prunus persica var. nucipersica)
1-2FT Height, locally grafted at Flowing Well Tree Farm
Sunmist Nectarine is a low-chill, early-fruiting nectarine variety well suited for Florida and the Southeast. It produces smooth-skinned, sweet, flavorful fruit and attractive spring blossoms that add ornamental value. This productive fruit tree is an excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and backyard gardens.
Mature Size
Typically reaches 10–15 feet tall with a similar spread when unpruned; can be maintained smaller with annual pruning.
USDA Growing Zones
Thrives in USDA Zones 8–10, performing best in warm climates with mild winters.
Placement & Sun Exposure
Plant in full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) for optimal flowering, fruit set, and flavor. Choose an open site with good air circulation to reduce disease pressure.
Planting Instructions
Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the tree at the same soil level as it was grown in the container. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Soil Requirements
Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged areas, as nectarines are sensitive to root rot. Slightly acidic to neutral soils are ideal.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, provide deep watering during dry periods, especially while fruit is developing.
Fertilizer
Apply a balanced slow-release fruit tree fertilizer in early spring and again after harvest if needed. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce fruit quality.
Pruning
Prune annually in late winter while dormant to maintain an open center structure. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and thin for airflow and sunlight penetration.
