Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua)

is a fast-growing Florida native shade tree known for its star-shaped leaves, strong upright form, and exceptional fall color. Its dense summer canopy provides welcome shade in parks, campuses, large residential properties, streetscapes, and naturalized landscapes, while foliage can shift to vivid shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple in autumn.

Sweetgum performs best in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained soil, although it adapts to sandy and clay soils and tolerates occasional wet conditions. Its distinctive spiky seed capsules create winter interest but can be a maintenance consideration near sidewalks, patios, play areas, and other high-traffic spaces; reserve it for locations with room to appreciate its scale and seasonal display.
